Ela Weissberger

Farewell to

Ela Weissberger,  née Stein (June 30, 1930 - March 30, 2018)

30 March 2018
Ela Weissberger, née Stein, one of "The Girls of Room 28" died March 30, 2018, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Never will I forget our first meeting in 1996 in her home in Tappan and the uncountable moments we spent together - in Spindlermühle (the photo was taken there in September 2006), and in all the places we came together after the publication of the book and the opening of the exhibition
The Girls of Room 28 in 2004.

I always see Ela waring a butterfly - like in September 2005 in Überlingen, Lake of Constance. where this photo was taken and our exhibition was shown and Ela and her friends were invited to share their experiences in the frame of performances of the children's opera Brundibár. Ela had played the cat in the Theresienstadt performances, and to remember the children of the Brundibár cast and the children of Theresienstadt became her passionate mission.

This mission has taken her to many places in the US and in the world, onto  many stages where Brundibár was played, and into the media. Her words have reached and touched the heart of uncountable people. - This is a little comfort: to know that millions of people had listened to you and were touched by your words and your lively  and loving way you remembered your friends!

Without you, Ela, who invited me to Prague after our first encounter in the US, I would never have got to know your friends. I am forever grateful to you and never forgot as long as I live.
